What is the Traffic Management for DSPs (Inventory Inclusion)?
The Traffic Management for DSPs (Inventory Inclusion) provides a self-serve UI to DSPs so that they don't have to depend solely on their PubMatic account managers and operations team to include traffic from certain sites. DSPs can directly access this inclusion tool through the Media Buyer Console (MBC UI) to include sites or apps with desired traffic coming from PubMatic. There may be multiple reasons for DSPs to include certain traffic such as, premium traffic, supported ad sizes, desired audience, etc.
Since DSPs can use this inclusion tool themselves, they can include such traffic immediately without any delays.
How does a user access the Traffic Management for DSPs (Inventory Inclusion)?
The Traffic Management for DSPs (Inventory Inclusion) is available in the MBC UI under the Campaigns tab. Once a DSP user clicks the Campaigns tab, the Campaigns listing UI displays a list of all campaigns associated with that DSP's account. The UI displays campaigns either in the Active, Paused or Scheduled state. It also displays the spend and paid impressions for the last seven days of each campaign.
To view the Inventory Inclusion UI, the user needs to click the Modify button corresponding to a campaign. Depending upon the campaign's inclusion mode, the inventory inclusion tool displays the following:
- Auto-approval or RTB mode: In this mode, the Inventory Inclusion UI displays just a toggle to indicate that all the inventory available on the PubMatic platform is included in this campaign.
- Sites mode: In this mode, the Inventory Inclusion UI displays the list of sites currently applicable for that specific campaign along with a set of filters to find additional sites. Using a combination of these filters, DSPs can locate the sites that they want to include in this campaign and select the corresponding check boxes to include that traffic. The checked boxes represent the traffic that is currently being sent to the DSP while the unchecked boxes represent available traffic within the PubMatic platform.
- Ad Sizes mode: In this mode, the Inventory Inclusion UI displays the list of ad tags currently applicable for that specific campaign along with a set of filters to find additional ad tags. Using a combination of these filters, DSPs can locate the ad tags that they want included in this specific campaign and include them by checking their boxes. The ad tags with selected check boxes represent the traffic that is currently being sent to the DSP while the deselected check boxes represent the traffic that is available within the PubMatic platform.
Which criteria can a user use to filer inventory?
DSPs can filter the list of sites by using one or more combinations of the following criteria:
- Sites mode:
- Searching for a specific text in the site or app URL.
- Publishers associated with the sites.
- Platform of the sites: Web, Mobile Web, Mobile App iOS, and Mobile App Android.
- IAB categories associated with the sites.
- Sites newly created in the PubMatic platform since the campaign was last modified.
- Ad Sizes mode:
- Searching for a specific text in the ad tag name.
- Publishers associated with the sites.
- Sites associated with the given ad tags or sizes.
- Ad sizes associated with the given ad tags.
- Ad format associated with the given ad tags: Banner/Rich Media, Native and Video.
- Platform of the sites associated with the given ad tags: Web, Mobile Web, Mobile App iOS, and Mobile App Android.
- Ad tags newly created in the PubMatic platform since the campaign was last modified.
How does a user find out about new sites/ad tags added to the PubMatic platform?
Suppose a DSP modifies a campaign to include current inventory but a publisher creates new sites/ad tags in the PubMatic platform the next day. The DSP won't be aware of new inventory as it becomes available. In such cases, if a DSP wants to know which new sites/ad tags have been added since it has last modified a campaign, then it can use the New toggle filter to view the list of sites/ad tags which have been added to the platform after that campaign's last modification date.
In the Sites inclusion mode, once the New filter is enabled, the site listing table displays a list of all new sites added and highlights them with the New label next to the Site ID.
In the Ad Sizes inclusion mode, once the New filter is enabled, the ad tag listing table displays a list of all new ad tags added and highlights them with the New label next to the Ad Tag ID.
Are the sites/ad tags labeled New kept constant for a campaign?
The list of sites/ad tags which are labeled as New in a campaign are only maintained until that campaign is modified. Only sites/ad tags that have been created post modification date are labeled as New in that campaign's Inventory Inclusion UI. For example, if a campaign was last modified yesterday and 10 new sites/ad tags were added since then, the user will login and see 10 sites/ad tags labeled as New in the Inventory Inclusion UI for this campaign. If the user selects one of these New sites/tags for inclusion and saves the campaign, then the remaining nine sites/tags are no longer labeled as New. It is assumed that the user has already seen those nine new sites/tags and opted not to include them in this campaign.
Why is the Select All check box in a disabled state?
By default, the Select All check box is in a disabled state. If this check box is enabled by default and a user accidentally selects it, then all of the traffic available on PubMatic's platform will be sent to the DSP through that campaign, which may impact performance. To prevent this, this check box is disabled by default.
To enable it, the user needs to select at least one value in any of the filters (Search, Publisher, Sites, Ad sizes, Ad format, Platform, IAB Categories, or New). This allows the DSP to select all sites/ad tags matching a specific filtered criteria.
If a DSP wants to receive all of PubMatic's traffic, then the inclusion mode of that campaign should be switched to the Auto-approval or RTB mode, instead of using the Select All check box.
What is the difference between the Visible and Select All check boxes?
The Visible check box allows the user to select all of the sites/ad tags that are displayed on the screen while the Select All check box allows a user to select all of the sites/ad tags that match the filtered criteria (which may not all be displayed on the current page).
How does a user include traffic to meet QPS limitations?
The site/ad tag listing table in the Inventory Inclusion tab also displays the average Queries Per Second (QPS) of each site/ad tag calculated over the last seven days. Using this data, DSPs can analyze the QPS that they need to reduce, select the sites/ad tags to be included and sum up their average QPS values to meet the required number.
Can a user include sites/ad tags based on different filters in a single operation?
Yes, Inventory Inclusion allows a user to select sites/ad tags based on some filters, then select more sites/ad tags based on another set of filters and save the entire selection in the end. It also allows users to deselect some sites/ad tags and select other sites/ad tags in the same operation and then save them together. However, if a user plans to select and deselect (toggle the check box for) the same site/ad tag in the same operation, then it is recommended that the user separate Select and Deselect activities into two separate save operations.
When will inclusion settings be applied to a campaign?
Once a user modifies the inclusion list for a campaign using Inventory Inclusion, then the PubMatic system may take up to one hour to enforce those changes.
Why are there additional tabs in a disabled state next to Inventory Inclusion? When will those tabs become enabled?
In addition to the Inventory Inclusion tab, PubMatic is also planning to provide DSPs with additional self-serve tools such as geo targeting, video targeting, mobile targeting, and much more in the near future. As each of these tools get released, PubMatic will inform the DSPs accordingly.
How does a user view the complete list of all sites included in a campaign?
If a user wants to view all sites included in a specific campaign, then they can generate a downloadable file containing the full inclusion list for that campaign by clicking the Download button in the top right corner of the site/ad tag listing table.
What happens if a user makes changes to the campaign's inclusion or exclusion list and navigates to another tab in the Campaigns UI?
If a user selects some sites or ad tags in the Inventory Inclusion or Inventory Exclusion tab and moves to another tab in the Campaigns UI, then the UI displays a warning icon on the tab to inform the user that he/she has some unsaved changes on that tab and needs to go back to save those changes. For example, in the below screenshot, if the user made some changes on the Inventory Inclusion tab but forgot to save those changes and moved to the Inventory Exclusion tab, then the inclusion tab displays a warning icon to inform the user about unsaved changes.
